In 2005 I was invited to exhibit at the inaugural Lianzhou Photo Festival in Guangdong Province, China. I fell in love with the aura of the place and offered the organisers to return the following year to photograph and create an installation in the old 'Candy Factory', a three story warehouse, sweltering during summer and freezing in winter, which would become my home for three months as I worked on my project.
Not far down the same street as the Candy Factory was a paper recycling warehouse, which was where I made this photograph. I had never been in before but this particular day something resonated, the light and the voices perhaps and it all fell into place.
