In 1989 I traded Australia's scorched red earth for the sweltering jungles of the tropics.
In the years since, I have buried friends and strangers, watched governments toppled and cities fester, revolutions triumph, mountains crumble, nations drowned and the wet, red, liquid life soak into the dark earth. |
The stink of life's injustices, Man's Machiavellian nature and the loaded hand he deals to those lesser-off than he, hovers rank in my memory.
It is these injustices that have provided both the fuel and the direction for this journey that has spanned nigh on three decades; a journey that has brought me into contact with some of the most remarkable and generous people I could have been fortunate enough to meet.

I write now from a place I come to suspect has long lain dormant in my subconscious. The sun spills over the lip of a snow-capped Mt.Glandasse and pours steaming into my living room. Warms my skin.
Looking back on my life in Asia, 5063 nautical miles behind me, I contemplate the task of making sense of it all.
A web presence seems like a logical place to begin mapping an odyssey of such intent. This and being true to my promise of sharing my work with all those who have asked along the way.
Like all the best things in life, this will grow organically; metamorphosing as I commit words and images to pages, ironing out the inevitable glitches as I go.
I invite you to join me on this voyage of rediscovery, as, little by little I recollect the near and distant past.

This site serves as an introduction to my work and life. It is personal and anecdotal by nature and is meant neither as an exhaustive archive nor a complete historic record of any of the events described.
With the obvious exception of many of the medium format portraits, where I have selected locations, my chosen modus operandi does not allow for the staging or manipulation of images or subjects in any way; ever.
In 'Pereginations' you will find vignettes of various places and episodes, along with related reviews and links where appropriate. In many cases I have further images and texts to add, but this will happen over time when time allows.
'Installations', details the birth and metamorphosis of my personal workplace, from Bangkok's Chinatown, through Chiang Mai in the North, across the oceans to the Vercors region of France and down to the ancient Roman city of Arles.
If like me, you are someone who spends little time on websites, then the menu is hidden under that little white box in the top left of the page. (de nada) I recommend viewing at full screen, with a glass of wine in a comfortable chair.
Safe travels for you all,
Philip Blenkinsop
